Inflatable Rugby Ball Venue
FSS has proudly created the world’s first giant rugby ball. The giant inflatable rugby ball was created as a promotional venue to be erected along side the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris, for the 2007 Rugby World Cup to showcase New Zealand.

Client: Inside Out Productions / Tourism NZ
Project Category: Inflatable Venue
Scope of Work: Concept - Design - Fabricate – Install
Fabric Type: Ferrari 502 Blockout PVC
Function: Deployable promotional venue
Location: Eiffel Tower, Champs de Mars, Paris, France
Size: 25m long, 17m wide, 12m high
Completion: Oct 2007
Comments: The concept for the project was dreamed up by the long time collaborators of Warwick Bell of FSS & Mike Mizrahi of Inside Out Productions, whom have already collaborated on a number of notable projects.

The Rugby Ball was developed as a promotional venue for Tourism New Zealand’s “100% New Zealand” campaign. Inside the venue the internal surface of the ball is used as a 360-degree projection surface to promote New Zealand as a destination. The Ball will be open to the public and with the 360-degree surround imagery & the Ball’s particular acoustics, will give visitors a totally unique and “Kiwi” experience.

Visitors enter the Ball via a specially designed revolving air-lock door that maintains an air lock and the internal pressure of the ball. Specialised monitoring equipment maintains a constant air pressure and air quality in the ball, by controling two large fans that are concealed under the floor of the ball and air-conditioning plant.

The Ball’s outer skin is held in placed by a large oval ring frame  secured to the ground by a large water ballast sausage.
Inside the Ball, with its 12m stud and large mezzanine, floor 220 people can be accommodated. The interior comprises a stage, bar, toilets, storage, control room and seating areas.

All the components of the Ball were fabricated and fully tested in New Zealand prior to leaving for Paris.

In Paris the Ball was re-erected in 3 days and will remain inflated 24/7 for 3 weeks. Having all ready withstood heavy rain & a thunderstorm, it is proving itself as a very robust venue, yet portable and efficient to erect.
